TURRAMURRA
HOUSE #2
“Karuah” is a brutalist designed single level home designed by Cullinan Ivanov architects for our repeat clients in Turramurra. This five bedroom home consists of two wings, with one side being dedicated to the parents’ bedroom, open plan dressing room, ensuite and study. The other side has three bedrooms, kids lounge and guest room.
The portal windows in the loggias are designed to be at a selected and restricted height to deny the view to the other wing, and direct the view into the pool and landscaped area.
Built in reactive clay, the site went through government lockdowns, restrictions and significant rainfall across the 24 month build.
The steel window portals (up to 14m long) were installed and temporarily braced in position so the brickwork could be built up and tie it all together. These portals also acted as lintels for the brickwork above and recessed window frames and blind boxes. A very complex and detailed undertaking that required precision from the fabricators, crane operators and onsite install team.
Off form concrete is a feature of the entry portico, with the walls and roof being poured together eliminating any construction or cold joints. There are also polished concrete floors with underfloor heating that were poured in the early stages of the job. This required protection and care and critically, no fixings through the slab for the likes of temporary bracing and OFC walls.
Prefinished powder coated plywood panels line the ceiling in the living and kitchen area.
The bathrooms are incredibly detailed, utilising multiple materials to bring them together with minimal tolerances.
This was a complex and challenging build, which has resulted in a beautiful and unique family home.
